ZOO Venues: Home of the unexpected

In nearly a decade at the Fringe, ZOO Venues has earned a reputation for hosting some of the most imaginative work seen at the Festival, and its 90-show 2011 line-up is no exception

We book shows on the quality and creativity of their ideas as much as the companies' reputations, and as ZOO shows racked up Herald Angels, Fringe Firsts, Total Theatre and Musical Theatre Matters Awards in recent years, the accolades were always evenly split between our major international companies and groups virtually unknown before they embarked on Fringe runs with us.

This year brings the same balance of exciting new talent and proven success. Our flagship dance and physical theatre programme sees the return of ZOO and Fringe favourites 2Faced Dance Company, Scottish Dance Theatre, Chickenshed, DOT504 and Isobel Cohen, plus ZOO debuts for companies including Luca Silvestrini's Protein, State of Flux and Smith Dance Theatre.

We're proud to welcome a large group of shows from the Escalator East to Edinburgh and British Council Showcase programmes. Among the latter is Idle Motion's returning Vanishing Horizon, a 2010 ZOO sell-out adored by both critics and audiences, and one of two shows from the company this year as they take their big ideas into a much bigger space with new creation The Seagull Effect.

Other highlights include a ZOO Roxy debut for Trestle co-founder Toby Wilsher's new company MetaMorpho, Spike Theatre getting Edinburgh in Olympic mood with The Games, Fine Chisel Theatre following up the success of Firing Blanks with new show 4.3 Miles from Nowhere at ZOO, SHOCK N AWE exploring all things male with the innovative Muscle, and Fool's Proof Theatre bringing a vision of the future in It's Uniformation Day.
